Free crochet granny square patterns: August 2014BAMCAL #1

As usual, the free crochet patterns via the 2014 BAM CAL group on Ravelry for this month made me smile!  (Said it before, but, yes, they really do)!  I learn something new with every one of them, and the variety of designs is so interesting.

It's already the middle of August (where does time GO?)!  Here are three granny squares crocheted for my afghan.

Free Crochet Pattern - Eve's Coverlet Granny Square
Eve's Coverlet Granny Square
Main 12"

Each month in this CAL there are three free crochet patterns:  (2) 12" and (1) 6" granny squares.

One 12" square is chosen by the moderator; it is called the Main 12" square.  For the other two squares, anyone that wants to, nominates their favorites, and then they are voted on by the group. The 12" square voted on by the group is called the Filler 12" square.  The 6" is just called the 6" square.

Of course, anyone can do more or less - or other blocks.  There are no crochet police here!

Filler 12"
Above and to the left are the two 12" squares, but using Simply Soft yarn and a G hook, I make 9" blocks.  Even then sometimes I still need to add rows.  (SS yarn is such a thin worsted, and looks best - to me, anyway - with a G hook, which is often smaller than what the pattern calls for).

This is the 6" square. It was fun to do, and the pattern instructions were very clear.  I added 3 more rows to make 6".  (You won't have to add rows if you don't use Simply Soft yarn, and use the hook the pattern called for).  But, info for the extra rounds is in my notes if you need them!

Until next time!

Free crochet granny square patterns: July 2014BAMCAL

The month of July came and went, and two more granny squares  have been crocheted for my afghan.  The free crochet patterns for these blocks via the 2014BAMCAL group on Ravelry every month always make me smile!  (Yes, they really do).  So fun to do, I learn something new with every one of them, and the variety of designs is so interesting.
(Click on the pics for info, including the link to the patterns)
The free crochet patterns are for 12" squares. (Each month also has a 6" square but I skipped that one this month).

I make 9" squares by using Caron Simply Soft yarn and a size G hook.  (SS yarn is such a thin worsted, and looks best - to me, anyway - with a G hook, which is often a smaller hook than what the pattern calls for).  It's rare that a 12" pattern is designed with SS yarn, so it works out well.  Even then, occasionally I still need to add rows, which I always put in my notes on my project page on Ravelry; it helps the next time the square is made!

Until next time!

The patterns for the top two are for 12" squares, but using Caron Simply Soft yarn and a G hook, I make 9" blocks.  Even then, sometimes I still need to add rows.  (SS yarn is such a thin worsted, and looks best - to me, anyway - worked with a G hook, which is often smaller than what the pattern calls for).

For the same reason, when I do a 6" square, like the bottom two, I need to add rows.

Spiraling Into Spring was a challenge to begin; I'd never done tapestry crochet before!  But the pattern was well written and there were good pictures.  A clear head is needed and just take one thing at a time and it goes well, and then it's easy.  In fact, once I got going, I loved it, want to do more like this, and expanded my crochet knowledge, which is always fun!

Cathedral Converts was easy and fun, and I loved how the popcorns made the corners.  I modified it by changing to blue for the popcorns to stand out; it was not hard to do.

Easy modifications were made to the 6" Reflected Dragonfly square, which was adorable on it's own; I'm just a tinkerer!  I wanted a square to go with it, and so wrote the pattern for the Lily Pad square, and think they look cute together.

If you make any, please let me see - I love to seeing other's creations!

Outside-In Crocheted Granny Squares

     Outside-in crocheted granny square

I've enjoyed testing two crocheted grannies for funnydiebarbarin (on Ravelry).  Actually it was one square, but it had two options so I did it in each option.

funnydiebarbarin is the original Outside-In Block Designer, meaning, you start crocheting the outside of the block first, and work your way to the center!

The first square made was the yellow/blue/brown one on the left, and I liked it so much that I made it in my 2014 CAL colors (on the right).  The only difference the option made for that square was connecting the corners.  Can you see?

I must say I love her designing style!   The square had various stitches with interesting looks and textures, and were not difficult, and working from the outside in is a fun change!

If you want to try this technique, try out her Outside-In Crochet Square.  The squares above were test squares, so the patterns are not published as of this post, but click her name (above) to go to her designs and check for the latest.

Free crochet pattern - Calla Lily Granny Square
This crocheted calla lily block is one of my favorites; and what makes it jaw-dropping, is that the pattern is free!

The name of the pattern is Purifying Puritans 12" Afghan Block/Tutorial by Margaret MacInnis (aka mugginsquilts on Ravelry).

The pattern as written did not have the bullions in the center.  It's gorgeous just as it is written, though, isn't it?

TO GET THE LOOK

  • The pattern is for a 12" square, but I used hook size G (4.00mm) and Simply Soft yarn to make the 9" square that I prefer.
  • Wish I could take credit, but the idea of adding bullions was not mine!  I was inspired by fellow Ravelry member, Lettice.  View her notes to see how to do it:  Click Lettice's Peace Lily or cut and paste the following link: http://www.ravelry.com/projects/Lettice/purifying-puritans-12-afghan-block-tutorial-2  (You shouldn't have trouble but if you do, let me know; I'll get them to you)!
  • See TIPS, below

TIPS

  • Don't be a dufus like I was!  I struggled for a long time trying to understand how the petals connected, before remembering that the lovely Ms. MacInnis provides two pattern options - a short version (which I had downloaded), AND a photo tutorial (which I hadn't, because I forgot about it). *Banging head on computer*  My confusion would have been solved in the blink of an eye because it was an easy thing!
  • Are bullions scary???!  The square itself is not at all difficult to do.  The addition of bullions does increase the difficulty, but if you've been afraid of the bullion stitch, watch this video, using a STRAW as an aid:  Crochet the Roll or Bullion Stitch + tips & tricks.
Crocheted example of the bullion stitch
I'd never done bullions before either.  Here are my very first ones I did after watching it.  If I hadn't found this particular method, I might not have adopted this as a "can do" stitch!

Free crochet pattern - Calla LilyHere's my first "lily" for the square, using Lettice's instructions.

If you watch the video and give the bullion stitch a try, or find another method that worked better for you, I'd like to hear your personal experience!

In any case, whether you're new to bullions like I was, or experienced, I'd love to see some of your work!

Until next time!

Free crochet granny square patterns: April 2014BAMCAL #3

It's nice being in a Crochet-A-Long (CAL).  It's a non-stressful way to have an afghan at year's end, and educational to see how color combinations the other members have done can totally alter the look of the same block.

This is the April "filler" square.  I don't know what that means, exactly, but I do know it's pretty!  It was a great pattern, easy to make, but is so striking that it doesn't look easy!  This is a keeper.

The pattern is for a 12" square, but using Caron Simply Soft yarn and a G hook, I make 9" blocks. Even then, sometimes I still need to add rows. (SS yarn is such a thin worsted, and looks best - to me, anyway - worked with a G hook, which is often smaller than what the pattern calls for).  For the same reason, when I do a 6" square, I need to add rows.

Hope you try this one and show it to me!

Free crochet granny square patterns: April 2014BAMCAL #2

It's hard to believe such pretty granny squares are free patterns!  Isn't it nice that the designers are so generous to do that?

Free crochet pattern: Fresh Air 6" Granny
Fresh Air 6" - Click for pattern & info

This first square is a CAL pattern, meaning it was voted on by the group to be the “official” CAL 6” square for April.   It worked up quickly and easily, and the design is quite interesting.

Daffodowndillies 6" Granny Square
Daffodowndillies
Click for pattern & info

The daffodil granny square is an optional one I chose.  It was as fun to make as it looks, and actually quite easy!

The pattern used a stitch called a “crossed double crochet (xdc)" to make the trumpet, which was new to me.  I loved that stitch, and hope to be able to crochet it again or incorporate it in one of my own designs.

Daffodowndillies 6" Granny SquareI made a few customizations:  added stamens and “frill” to the trumpet.  Added rows to bring it up to 6” because I use Caron Simply Soft yarn, which is a thin worsted, and a size G (4.0mm) hook.  If you go to find the pattern, scroll down to see the details in my notes.

Daffodowndillies 6I'd love to see a pic if you do this square!

This is the "main" square for April. The main square is chosen by the CAL moderator  each month.

I love this design.  It has so much going on design-wise, and so many crazy possibilities with color choices.

Because I use Caron Simply Soft yarn, which is a thin worsted, and hook size G (4.0 mm) my squares work out to 9", which is what I prefer.

Each month there is also a 12" "filler" square, and a 6" square, both of which are nominated, and then voted on, by members.  Here are the other squares for April:

Free crochet granny square patterns: January, February, March 2014BAMCAL

So fun!!  I joined a group on Ravelry, the 2014 Block-A-Month Crochet A-Long.  Every month we are given 3 granny squares to crochet - two 12" squares, and one 6".  We have the option of crocheting one, or all three.  No hard and fast rules, and it’s such a nice a supportive group!  Members can post pics of what they've done, and it's a lot of fun to see all the color choices and variations!

Here are the “official” ones I've done so far, for January, February, and March (click the pics for patterns & notes).

Actually, I prefer, and therefore make, 9" squares instead of the 12" the pattern calls for (the "Crocodile Flower" is the only 12").  I do this by using Caron Simply Soft worsted yarn (a thin worsted), and a G hook.
